After losing their beloved dog of 11 years, a Texas couple never expected they’d be ready to open their hearts again — until a mysterious little animal showed up in their backyard and changed everything.
Chelsea and her husband, Steven, were away one weekend when Chelsea began receiving texts from neighbors warning that an animal appeared to be wandering around their yard. With neighborhood cats often roaming nearby, she didn’t think much of it at first.
That changed the moment she got home.
Huddled behind a plant in the corner of the yard was a tiny animal that looked uncannily like a baby coyote.
“He backed himself up behind our plant in the corner, barking his head off at me,” Chelsea explained. “You could tell he was very scared.”
Her initial reaction was panic and heartbreak. The thought that the animal may have been stuck in their yard for up to two days during brutal Texas summer heat — with temperatures nearing 100 degrees — was overwhelming. Chelsea immediately set out bowls of food and water while trying to figure out how to help him safely.
With assistance from her sister and neighbors, they tried to gently corner the frightened animal, but he darted from one side of the yard to the other, refusing to let anyone get close. After about an hour and a half of frantic running, he finally wore himself out. That’s when Chelsea’s sister managed to carefully throw a blanket over him and place him into a crate.
A visit to the vet soon cleared up the mystery: he wasn’t a coyote at all — just a terrified puppy looking for safety.

Later, Chelsea reviewed her security camera footage and discovered how the little dog had been sneaking into their yard through gaps in their iron fence.
“The spaces in between were enough for him to slip through,” she said. “He was only 12 pounds at the time, and he kept coming back to our house.”
With no microchip and no immediate leads, the couple began searching for the puppy’s owner. They posted on social media, contacted local veterinarians, and hung up flyers. But as the weeks passed with no response, a quiet realization began to set in.
Why had this puppy chosen their yard?
“All at once, we admitted to each other that we both wanted to keep him,” Chelsea said. “He weaseled his way into our hearts.”
The couple named him Yote, a playful nod to his coyote-like appearance, and celebrated his official adoption with a party — complete with balloons, cake, and party hats.
Since then, Yote has continued to grow — both in size and personality.
“He’s 31 pounds now,” Chelsea said. “He has the most goofy, loving personality. His personality comes out more and more every day.”
Chelsea later shared the emotional rescue story on Instagram under the handle @yotethedog, where it quickly went viral. The October 27 video has since racked up more than 317,000 views, with thousands of commenters convinced the meeting was anything but random.
“He found you. Knew where to go,” one person wrote.
“It was meant to be,” another added.
