No one should have to face cancer or chemotherapy alone, yet isolation is often one of the hardest parts of the journey. That’s why therapy dogs can make such a life-changing difference — and a 10-year-old golden retriever named Hogan proved just how powerful that bond can be.

In February 2025, Hogan met his new best friend at exactly the right moment. Fourteen-year-old Truman had just been diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and arrived at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to begin chemotherapy when the gentle therapy dog climbed onto his bed and promptly fell asleep beside him.

From that moment on, the two were inseparable.

Hogan and his handler, Tina, had been volunteering as a therapy dog team since 2017, but she quickly noticed something different about this visit. Hogan bonded with Truman in a way she had never seen before — so much so that he often refused to leave the teenager’s room.

What made their connection even more remarkable was a shared struggle neither expected. Hogan had also been diagnosed with cancer just weeks apart from Truman. In an extraordinary twist of fate, the two battled the disease side by side, offering each other comfort, motivation, and companionship during their toughest days.

Their journeys followed a similar path to recovery as well. Truman completed his chemotherapy on June 18, while Hogan finished his own cancer treatment on August 21. When it came time to celebrate Truman’s milestone, there was no question who needed to be there.

“It was such a relief to go home,” Truman told CHLA. “Hogan helped my time there so much by giving me something to look forward to. He helped it feel less like a hospital.”

Stories like theirs show just how powerful therapy dogs can be. From hospitals and senior centers to airports and courtrooms, these specially trained animals bring comfort, calm, and joy to people during moments of stress and fear.

For Truman, Hogan provided more than cuddles — he brought normalcy, hope, and a reason to smile when everything felt uncertain. And for Hogan, Truman was more than a patient — he was a best friend worth staying strong for.

Together, they didn’t just survive cancer. They beat it — side by side. 🐾❤️
