A dramatic rescue mission on a dangerous San Francisco beach ended with one very lucky Pug safely back in his owner’s arms — and the entire internet cheering for the firefighters who saved him.

On May 4, a Pug named Fergus found himself trapped on the steep cliffs at Fort Funston in San Francisco, California, after somehow ending up stranded far below the beach trails. Around 1 p.m., someone called 911 to report the terrified little dog stuck along the rocky bluffs, triggering a major rescue response from the San Francisco Fire Department.

Video shared by the SFFD shows just how intense the rescue really was. Firefighters carefully lowered one rescuer nearly 60 feet down the unstable cliffside to reach Fergus, who appeared helplessly stuck on the beach below. Thankfully, the operation went smoothly, and rescuers safely brought the frightened pup back to the top of the cliff.

The emotional moment Fergus reunited with his worried owner had viewers breathing a collective sigh of relief. Social media quickly flooded with praise for the firefighters who treated the rescue with the same urgency and professionalism they would for any human emergency.

“So glad Fergus is ok! He’s one of our fur friends,” one commenter wrote online after the dramatic footage was shared.

One firefighter involved in the rescue, Battalion 8’s Steve Cassidy, may have been responding to one of his final calls before retirement after more than 30 years with the San Francisco Fire Department — making the successful rescue even more meaningful.

The department also revealed a fascinating detail in the comments section that many viewers didn’t know. According to SFFD, the special dog rescue harness used during the mission was actually designed by a now-retired SFFD captain after realizing stranded dog rescues happened far too often and there wasn’t a safe, reliable way to secure dogs during rope rescues. The harness is now sold by rescue equipment company CMC Rescue.

While many people celebrated Fergus’ safe return, others wondered how a small dog could end up trapped on such a dangerous cliff in the first place.

Fort Funston, part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, is famous for its scenic beach views, massive sand bluffs, and dog-friendly atmosphere. But the area’s towering cliffs — some reaching nearly 200 feet high — can be extremely dangerous. The bluffs are known to shift, crumble, and collapse unexpectedly, and loose dogs have reportedly gone over the edge before.

One local commenter explained, “Every time I’m there, people let their dogs run wild, so of course some will go right over the edge. Mine is not allowed off-leash as I’m pretty sure she’d go right over!”

The terrifying incident is now serving as an important reminder for pet owners everywhere: even the happiest, most playful dogs can get into dangerous situations in seconds. Beaches, cliffs, and rocky trails may look fun, but keeping dogs safely leashed in risky areas can prevent a scary accident from turning tragic.

Thankfully for Fergus, this story had a happy ending — thanks to some fearless firefighters willing to risk a difficult cliff rescue to save one stranded little Pug.
