Sometimes pets do not wait for people to find them. They pick their humans first.
That is exactly what happened to runner Amy Kanakuri, who had a surprise encounter with a stray dog while she was out for a run.
According to a TikTok video shared by The Washington Post, Amy was jogging when a furry little stranger suddenly appeared and decided to tag along.
At first, Amy was not sure what to think. She did not know if the dog was friendly or if she should be nervous. But the pup kept following her, as if she had already made up her mind.
She was going with Amy.
After the run, Amy left the area, but she could not stop thinking about the dog. Something about the encounter stayed with her, so she decided to go back and check on the pup.
When she returned, the dog let Amy pick her up.
That was the moment Amy knew she had to help.
The stray dog was eventually rescued, legally adopted, and given a beautiful new name: Mahina.
What started as a random run turned into the beginning of a whole new life for the sweet pup.

The video has since racked up more than 5 million views, with animal lovers melting over the idea that Mahina chose her new mom on the spot.
“She chose you immediately,” one commenter wrote.
Another joked that the dog was probably thinking, “I also like runs. Let’s run together forever.”
Others said rescue dogs have a special kind of loyalty, and Mahina will likely spend the rest of her life showing Amy just how grateful she is.
It is the kind of story that feels almost meant to be. One woman went out for a normal run, and one stray dog saw her chance at a forever family.
Mahina may have started the day alone, but by the end of it, she had found the person she was clearly looking for.
