Giving a rescue dog the time and safety she needs to decompress can be life-changing, especially when more than one life is depending on her recovery.
Los Angeles-based model and actress @brooklynhbenson experienced that firsthand after rescuing a pregnant Cocker Spaniel on July 5. She found the frightened dog hiding behind a trash can outside a restaurant after the pup had reportedly been roaming the area for at least a week.
Once the dog was safe, Brooklyn came up with a clever way to spread the word and search for her possible family. She hoped someone might recognize the Cocker Spaniel and step forward, but as time passed, it began to look as though no one was coming for her.
Then the rescue dog delivered an unforgettable surprise.
Just as she was beginning to settle into her temporary home, the Cocker Spaniel went into labor. The frightened stray Brooklyn had pulled from behind a trash can was not only pregnant but ready to give birth.
It was puppy time.

Brooklyn had already gone above and beyond to protect the mother-to-be, but the unexpected delivery made her rescue mission even more urgent. The Cocker Spaniel and her newborn puppies suddenly depended on her for a safe place to rest, recover and begin their new lives.
Many viewers suspected the dog may have been abandoned.
“I think she got dumped,” commenter @seekeramnell wrote. “You were meant to find her; she needed your help! Good luck!”
The possibility that the pregnant dog was neglected or deliberately left behind is heartbreaking. Still, viewers were relieved that she found her way to someone willing to give her and her puppies the care they desperately needed.
Social media users also offered suggestions for locating the dog’s possible owner before labor interrupted those plans. Several recommended taking her to a veterinarian to be scanned for a microchip, something Brooklyn had likely already considered after bringing her to safety.
Microchips can help reunite lost pets with their families, but they are only effective when the owner’s contact information has been registered and kept up to date. Access to microchipping services can also be limited in some smaller communities.
For now, the mother Cocker Spaniel and her puppies appear to have landed in the best possible place. After spending days alone and frightened, the little family found a rescuer with a huge heart just when they needed her most.
