Police in Missouri thought they were hearing a strange cellphone ringtone while arresting a suspected car thief — until they opened the trunk and found two real baby goats inside.
The bizarre discovery happened after Kansas City police officers spotted a stolen vehicle and moved in to arrest the suspect.
While they were at the scene, officers kept hearing what sounded like a goat bleating nearby.
At first, one officer apparently thought the noise might be coming from a phone.
But when he asked the suspect about it, the answer caught everyone off guard.
“No, those are real goats; they’re in my trunk,” the suspect allegedly told police.
Officers opened the trunk and found two baby goats inside — one male and one female.
Police said the animals were so young that they had not yet been weaned from bottle feeding.
Authorities later learned that the goats belonged to the suspected carjacker, who was from out of state.
The animals were turned over to KC Pet Project and placed with a foster family experienced with goats.
After a 10-day stray hold, the foster family decided to officially adopt them.
The male goat was named Denver, while the female was named Aspen.
Police said both animals are “incredibly friendly,” but they were in rough shape when they were found.
The goats were reportedly very thin and suffering from a significant intestinal parasite burden.
Their foster family is now working to help them recover and is hoping both Denver and Aspen will eventually make a full comeback.
