A pair of premature donkey twins quickly stole hearts on an Iowa farm, but what began as an adorable surprise soon turned into a heartbreaking fight for survival.
The twins, Little Joe and Hoss, were born more than a month early on Aug. 4 to a mama donkey on Nick Hansen’s farm.
At first, viewers were thrilled to see the two tiny newborns together.
But people familiar with horses and donkeys immediately knew the situation was dangerous.
Twins are considered extremely risky in equine pregnancies because a mare or jenny’s body is generally built to carry just one baby at a time.
That means twin pregnancies can put the mother and both babies at serious risk, especially when there is not enough room for both foals to properly develop.
In this case, Little Joe was noticeably smaller than his brother Hoss, and both babies arrived significantly premature.
Because of Little Joe’s tiny size, much of the attention initially focused on whether he would be strong enough to survive.
Then, less than a week after the twins were born, the situation took a devastating turn.
Hoss suddenly became extremely sick and stiff.
Despite the family’s efforts, the newborn donkey did not recover.
Hoss died while surrounded by the people who had already fallen in love with him.

The loss was especially heartbreaking because the family had spent those first days carefully watching both premature babies and hoping they would beat the odds.
Now, all attention has turned to Little Joe.
The surviving twin has continued learning how to navigate life without his brother while receiving plenty of care from the family.
His progress has become a bittersweet bright spot following Hoss’ death.
Viewers who had followed the twins from the beginning have also rallied around Little Joe, hoping the tiny donkey continues growing stronger.
What started as the rare arrival of two baby donkeys ultimately became a painful reminder of just how dangerous twin pregnancies can be for equines.
But for the Iowa family caring for Little Joe, the surviving baby has become an especially precious reminder of the brother they lost.
