There are few things more rewarding than earning the trust of a frightened shelter dog, and one animal care specialist recently captured the exact moment a terrified puppy finally realized she was safe.
Animal care specialist @saucysurge was spending time with a young puppy who had recently arrived at the Animal Services Center of Mesilla Valley.
At first, the little dog was overwhelmed with fear.
As the man slowly approached, he stayed calm and gave the puppy plenty of space and time to figure out that he was there to help.
The puppy initially howled and cried in fear, clearly unsure of what was happening.
But after just a few minutes of patience and gentle reassurance, everything changed.
The once-terrified pup moved closer and eventually curled up in the animal care worker’s lap, soaking up affection as if she had finally realized she was with someone she could trust.
The transformation was heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.

For this little puppy, all it took was one calm person willing to sit nearby, move slowly and let her decide when she was ready.
And once she did, she appeared more than ready to make up for lost cuddle time.
