Most dog owners know there are plenty of ways a simple walk can suddenly go wrong, but coming face-to-face with a skunk has to be near the top of the list.
That almost became reality for one Samoyed and her owner during a walk through Jersey City, New Jersey, on Sept. 9.
Video shared by bystander @jimhernandez13 shows the fluffy white dog walking down the street when a skunk suddenly appears and starts following closely behind.
The Samoyed looks less than thrilled about the unexpected company.
Instead of barking or chasing the skunk, the dog keeps moving and repeatedly looks back as if trying to figure out why the little striped animal will not leave her alone.
The skunk, meanwhile, seems completely determined to stay close.
Luckily for everyone involved, the encounter remained surprisingly peaceful.
The dog’s owner calmly continued walking rather than panicking or making any sudden moves that might have startled the skunk.

Viewers quickly fell in love with the strange scene.
“A skunk and a Samoyed being friends makes so much sense actually, LOL,” one commenter wrote.
Another admitted the dog’s owner was moving much more slowly than they would have.
“She’s not moving fast enough for me,” the viewer joked.
Some people even wondered whether the skunk may have been young and confused.
Because of the Samoyed’s fluffy white coat, viewers speculated that the little skunk may have mistaken the dog for its mother or simply decided she looked safe.
Whatever the reason, the Samoyed clearly was not interested in making a new friend.
Fortunately, the encounter ended without anyone getting sprayed, which probably made this one of the luckiest skunk meetings a dog owner could ask for.
