Not every dog is meant to be a service dog—but sometimes, things work out even better than planned.
Walsh, a lovable Labrador Retriever, started his journey just like many future service dogs do. He was raised by a volunteer puppy raiser from a young age, learning the basics before heading off to formal training. These dogs go through years of specialized work, and only a select few actually make the final cut.
Walsh… did not.
Yep, he flunked out of service dog school.
But what happened next? Total heart-melter.
Instead of moving on to an unknown future, Walsh got the surprise of a lifetime when the very person who raised him as a puppy showed up to take him home—for good.
His former puppy raiser, now a vet school student, didn’t hesitate for a second. After spending so much time bonding with him early on, she had the first option to adopt him—and she took it without thinking twice.
“It was the easiest decision ever,” she shared.
Anyone who’s ever raised a puppy knows how hard it is to say goodbye, especially when you’ve poured so much love into them. For volunteer puppy raisers, sending their dogs off to training is always bittersweet… but in rare cases like this, they get a second chance.
And Walsh’s reaction? Pure joy.

You can tell this dog knows exactly who his person is, and the moment they’re reunited, it’s like no time passed at all.
Viewers online couldn’t get enough of the wholesome twist.
One person joked, “It was so nice of you to raise a service dog… and even nicer of him to flunk out so you could keep him!”
Honestly, they might be onto something.
